What is BreakShare?

BreakShare helps a group of friends at different colleges figure out when they're all actually home at the same time — Thanksgiving, winter break, spring break, whatever — so you can make plans instead of guessing. Add everyone's college, and it works out the overlapping date ranges automatically.

Quick Search vs. Groups — what's the difference?

Quick Search is for checking overlap by yourself, right now, with no setup. Nothing is saved anywhere or shared with anyone — it lives only in your browser and disappears if you clear your data.

Groups is for planning with actual friends. You create a group and get a short join code (or a shareable link); anyone with that code can open the same group, add themselves, see the same overlap dates, and add meetups. If a real backend is configured, everyone's changes sync live across devices — otherwise it runs in demo mode, saved only in the browser that created it.

Where do the break dates come from?

From a curated dataset (assets/colleges.js) built by pulling real dates off official academic calendars — registrar and provost pages — for each school, for the current academic year. It's not a live feed: schools revise their calendars, so always double-check the exact dates against your own school's registrar page before relying on them for travel plans. Don't see your school at all? You can add it manually with its own break dates — those stay local to your group.

How does the schedule photo quick-add work?

You can upload a screenshot of your class schedule and BreakShare will try to read it and guess at your classes (day, time, name) using on-device text recognition — the image itself is never uploaded anywhere, the recognition happens entirely in your browser. It's a best-effort first pass: you always get to review and edit the rows before saving anything.

Is my data private?

See the Privacy Policy for the full details, but in short: your name, college, schedule, and meetup info are visible to whoever else is in your group (that's the point), not to the public. Quick Search data never leaves your own browser.
