This page explains what data BreakShare collects, why, and how it's used. BreakShare is a small, independently-run tool — this isn't a legal document drafted by a law firm, but it's an honest, plain account of what actually happens with your data.
What we collect
When you use Quick Search, nothing is sent
anywhere. The names, colleges, and dates you enter are stored only
in your own browser (via localStorage) and are never
transmitted to us or anyone else.
When you use Groups, the information you and your group members enter — names, college selections, custom college break dates, class schedules, and meetup details — is stored either:
- only in the browser that created the group ("demo mode"), if no real backend is configured for this deployment, or
- in a Firebase (Google Cloud) database, if the site operator has configured one, so the group can sync across everyone's devices.
Anyone who has (or guesses) a group's join code or share link can view and edit that group's data — there are no user accounts or passwords. Treat a group's join code like you would a shared document link.
Schedule photos
If you upload a screenshot of your class schedule to use the "quick add" feature, that image is processed entirely inside your own browser using on-device text recognition. The image itself is never uploaded to us or to any server — only the class rows you choose to keep after reviewing them are saved with your schedule, same as if you'd typed them in by hand.
Analytics
If enabled on this deployment, we use Google Analytics (GA4) to understand overall traffic and usage — page views, general location (city/country level, from IP address), device type, and similar aggregate metrics. This sets a cookie in your browser. You can decline this in the cookie banner shown on your first visit, or by clearing that choice in your browser settings; declining doesn't affect anything else about the app.
Other third-party services
- Google Fonts — the typefaces on this site are loaded from Google's font CDN, which receives your IP address as part of serving the font files (standard for any site using web fonts).
- Firebase (Google Cloud) — if configured, group data is stored in Google's Firestore database.
- cdnjs — the on-device text-recognition library used for schedule photos is loaded from the cdnjs CDN.
What we don't do
We don't sell your data. We don't have a login system, so we don't hold passwords or verify identity. We don't read the contents of your schedule photos ourselves — that processing happens on your device, not ours.
Data retention and deletion
You can remove a person (and their schedule) from a group at any time using the "Remove" button. Leaving or abandoning a group doesn't automatically delete it — since there are no accounts, we have no way to verify a deletion request is really from someone in that group. Clearing your browser's site data removes anything stored locally (demo mode groups, Quick Search data, your "last group" shortcut).
Children's privacy
BreakShare is intended for college students and isn't directed at children under 13.
